Yupik Loon Mask
Salmon, Otter & Hoof Fetish
Contemporary
Up for sale is a beautiful Yupik mask painted and carved from red wood decorated with hoofs, salmon and one sea otter fetishes that attach to the outer ring. Interestingly the mask depicts the head of a bison or cow with antlers of a deer which I have not been able to locate another similar. The outer ring measures approximately 9 5/8 inches in diameter not including the additional length of when the fetishes are attached. The three salmon and one otter are held to the outer ring by feathers while the three hoof's feathers have snapped needing to just be easily replaced. Unfortunately one of the hoof are missing from the mask but could be easily carved and replaced. This mask came from the collection of a professor who grew up in Alaska and collected art items / antiques from mostly the Northwest Coast peoples. This mask does not bear any signatures and appears to have been carved within the last 40-50 years. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this rare mask but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
