Up for sale is an exceptional sculpture by the celebrated naive/folk female painter Edith Lunt Small. From Rochester, New York, Edith had a tremendous career painting and making wood sculptures covering a variety of subject matter. Known for her style described as “naive and sophisticated” they carry a high level of execution and aesthetic charm. This wooden sculpture depicts the famous SS Naushon which used to sail around Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket. This historical ship ran for 170 years before being decommissioned in 1987. This wonderfully fun and attractive work shows the steamer full of passengers from standing up on deck to every window bearing a unique figure. I love the clouds in relief in the sky and the stacked waves below creating a wonderfully deep three dimensional work. Signed in the low right corner on the bottom wave “Edith Lunt Small” and its original integrated wood frame measures 17.5 x 25.5 inches. The condition while good does show some wear and cosmetic imperfections from the paint showing some loss to multiple knicks a minor chips. This is an unbelievably fine and rare example from Edith Small, a true gem from the beloved female American folk artist. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this three dimensional sculpture but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
