Jens Sondergaard was a superb early to mid 20th century Danish artist who quickly took to art as a young man and was accepted into the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1916. This mostly watercolor on paper composition is titled verso in Danish, "Liggende Kvindelig Model, Siddende Mand Og Kat" "Pensel" or "Lying Female Model, Seated Male and Cat". Following the titles the medium is given "Pensel, Vandfarve Og Sot Blaek Over Blyant, Private Je" or "Brush, Watercolor and Ink over Pencil, Private Collection". This information is written verso typed on a piece of paper which is also accompanied by a lot sticker from the Kunsthallen the fine Copenhagen auction.
This watercolor is phenomenally painted as it shows a rather heavy set woman reclining in the nude on a dark black couch with blue accents. To the right a man sits eerily staring while a blue cat is present lower left. At the top center a painting of a nude woman is present with blue marks surrounding it shaped as phallic symbols. This painting is in very good condition with minimal waviness to the sheets edge as well as minimal edge wear and or imperfect corners. The watercolor fortunately is hinged at the top by two small pieces of tape and is NOT dry-mounted or adhered in anyway to its backed material. Works similar to this with such great subject matter and stylistic depiction rarely come up for sale from this accomplished, enjoyed and collected artist. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine Danish watercolor but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
