Leendert Springer Jr. is a traditional Dutch artist who has become well known for his landscapes, villages and town scenes. They depict the beautiful country side and the simple everyday life of the 19th century Dutch people. His father, Leendert Springer, was a prominent portrait artist and he also taught Springer Jr. how to paint. Leendert Springer Jr. has had many pieces come up for auction over the last twenty years and is a desired classical Dutch artist.
This is a wonderful traditional winter scene of a mid 19th century village in the Holland country side. The composition is full of fun and classic winter activity including towns people sledding and ice skating on the lake which has now frozen. While it is the winter time Springer Jr. still bring some warmth into the picture with a nice blue sky with white puffy clouds. In tehe far right background of the painting a windmill is visible which is a common depiction for the Dutch country side and a enjoyed one at that. Their is such wonderful detail in this oil painting on wood panel and its obvious why Springer Jr. is enjoyed by so many people. It is a relaxing painting and almost welcoming into a calm and worry free winter wonderland.
This painting does has damage around the border where the frame rubbed causing paint loss and an even craquelure. The edge of the board has small scratches, knicks, and or paint loss which can be seen in the photos. It could also use a good cleaning to remove surface dirt and grime that has accumulated on it over the last 150 years.
