William Otis Swett Jr. called Dover Plains, New York his home after returning to the United States in 1902 after being formerly trained in Europe. This oil painting is entitled "October" and depicts the beautiful fall landscape of his home Dover Plains, New York as identified from pencil writing on the reverse. This painting has some fabulous provenance of being exhibited at the prestigious "Salmagundi Club Thumb Box Exhibition" and sold for the sum of $65.00 dollars. Resting in its original gold wood frame measuring 11 1/4 x 13 1/4 inches while the artist board measures 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. In stunning overall condition this is a fabulous example of William's work that rarely surfaces in the market.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
William Otis Swett, Jr. (1859-1938) was a highly regarded artist. A pupil of Whistler and H. G. Dearth, he studied in Munich, Paris, Belgium and Holland. In 1903 he became a member of the Salma Club. He was also a member of the Chicago Artists' Guild Society of Independent Artists. He is still well known for his landscape paintings. He was a member of the Salamagundi Club of New York City, and the Society of Independent Artists. His specialties were marine paintings and landscapes.
William Otis Swett Jr. was born in Worchester, Mass.and studied extensively in Europe-- Germany France Belgium and Holland. He returned to the U.S. in 1902 and opened a New York studio. He painted in the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut (Falls Village) and in Old Lyme,Ct. He also painted in Ogunquit, Maine. During the summers he resided in Dover Plains. N.Y. Mr. Swett was a member of the Salmagundi Club, Chicago Galleries Association, Society of Indp. Artists. Swett exhibited at the Kent Art Assoc. Kent,Ct., Lime Rock Art Assoc. Lime Rock,Ct. Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Salmagundi Club,N.Y. National Academy. He painted Numerous landscapes and marines.
