Up for sale is an exquisite charcoal/crayon and graphite drawing by the talented New York based realist painter Winthrop Turney. Titled “Subway Manners” this drawing depicting four figures sitting on the subway of which the two men on the right are seen arguing with each other. The other man and woman to the left look over in annoyance as the two men disrupt their ride on the underground. The quality of this work is outstanding showing Winthrops realist expertise executed in this softer more gentle medium of charcoal/crayon. I love not only the clothing of the figures but their facial features which elevated this work far above the majority that become available by the artist. You can feel the mans anger to the right as his arms tense up and being to raise into a more powerful position surely gearing up to become even more annoying for the other riders. His tense body positioning and hands are in sharp contrast to that of the man and woman on the left which show nicely folded fingers and a relaxed sitting position.
Signed in the low left corner “Winthrop Turney” this drawing measures roughly 20 x 21 inches while its matting measures 27 x 28 inches. This work is being sold unframed but properly mounted and matted in museum quality material. Signed and dated by the artist verso the work was drawn in 1938, an era of difficulty for the Big Apple. The condition of the work while very good does show discoloration, toning, some minor wrinkling/waviness to its margins and a slight tear low left. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine drawing by Winthrop Turney titled “Subway Manners” but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
