Available now is a rather wonderful watercolor painting by the talented 20th-century American artist John Whorf. Depicting two men carrying a canoe over their shoulders down to the riverside; John very much enjoyed painting scenes similar to this of men hunting birds and paddling down rivers. This work is well-executed in his unique style which critics of his day said “broke new ground” with him applying oil paint techniques to the watercolor medium. Painting exclusively in watercolor by the late 1920’s John’s temperament favored the medium with his strong sense of immediacy and eagerness which oil would not allow.
This watercolor measures roughly 13 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches while the original frame measures 21 1/4 x 26 1/2 inches. The painting is signed in the lower-left corner with the bottom portion slightly covered by the original toned matting. The condition of the painting is quite good with expected discoloration being framed with nonarchival material of its day. This painting has not been removed from its frame and or tampered with but has sat as it has since being framed when it was newly painted. The frame shows imperfections including scratches and loss.
The painting is an absolutely wonderful work by the talented Massachusettes artist John Whorf who was so highly regarded he used to exhibit with artists including Edward Hopper and Henri Matisse. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this really nice watercolor but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
