Mid-Late 19th Century
William Williams, also known as William Williams of Plymouth, is a distinguished 19th century English artist who lived in Plymouth England and known for his river scenes, landscapes and coastal scenes such as this. Executed in oil on canvas this coastal scene is absolutely phenomenal; far exceeding the majority of his works that have come to auction in the last decade. In the background the Plymouth coast rolls down toward the ocean to a tall octagonal lighthouse in the left center. Multiple ships are present on the surface of the choppy water as the crews are about to thrown out their fishing nets on this bright blue sunny day. Large white cumulous clouds are present in the not too far distant sky with many seagulls flying away possibly indicating a future storm.
The painting is extremely well executed in its realistic style and soft lighting throughout the work. The condition is also superb with an expected even craquelure and some minuscule wear around where the edge of the frame touches the canvas. Williams cleverly painted in a small piece of driftwood floating in the lower right corner where he wittily signed his name "W. Williams Plymouth". Williams highest auction result was realized in 2011 at Sotheby's, London depicting "The Lock at Newton Marshes" that grossed over 17,000USD and this coastal scene easily is the second finest example to have surfaced.
