Up for sale is a beautiful nude portrait of a reclining "Alma Davies" resting against a blended background of greens and yellows. This large portrait is executed in oil on canvas measuring 46 x 30 inches and is signed "Carles" in the lower left corner. This work was interestingly enough appeared to have been painted for Robert Brackman who was another well known early 20th century artist known for his nude portraits. While Rob was born in Russia he moved to the states and began teaching art in New York in 1931, we can only presume the work dates to this period since Rob and Carles were only 100 miles apart from each other. The quality and level of execution is excellent painted in a more realism style but has aspects of impressionism as seen in the thick heavy brushstrokes which are mostly seen in Alma's knees and thighs as photographed. Carles did an overall fabulous job painting this large work with it looking striking when hung. The overall condition is good but their is a small patch in the top left corner, some slight surface imperfections to the canvas and some uneven discoloration to the varnish. The frame this rests in is defective and has been purely kept in it to better protect the work.
The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine original Arthur Beecher Carles Jr. nude portrait painting but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
