Up for sale is an exceedingly rare lithograph by the talented 19th century American artist John Bornet depicting a breathtaking panoramic view of Manhattan and its “environs”. Published in 1854 by A. WEINGARTNER, NY, this large-format stone lithograph image measures approximately 23 1/2 x 36 1/2 inches while it remains in its original gallery frame measuring 34 1/2 x 46 1/2 inches. Forty-seven locations are noted in the lower margin with twenty-four other locations being identified in the top arching margin. This view from the West shows New Jersey in the foreground, Manhatten in the middle and Westchester County, Long Island, and Staten Island in the distance. This print captures such a critical and important time in New York’s history dating back to when the very first recorded photographs were ever taken. This sweeping panoramic view shows countless ships in the harbor and even figures in the foreground with a nice landscape view. The condition of the print does show toning, discoloration and most notably a repaired tear in the print which runs vertically 6 inches seen top left stretching from the margin. This rare lithograph has an old paper label attached verso indicating it was retailed through Kennedy Gallery at the turn of the century.
