"New England Sunset, Maine"
Oil on Canvas
24 x 20 1/4 inches (canvas)
Signed: "L. Chaney" (low right)
Early to Mid 20th cent.
Lester Joseph Chaney was born in 1907 at Zala Hungary and while little is known about his life he did study for a short period of time at the Art Institute of Chicago. He studied under Charles Woodbury and Leon Lundmark so it is to no wonder that Chaney took a liking and had tremendous talent for coastal compositions and use of color. Chaney died in Illinois in 1998 but not after having a wonderful career filled with exhibitions in Chicago.
This original composition exhibits all the traits that Chaney is collected and appreciate for. Not only is this rocky coastal scene his preferred subject matter but also is the vibrant colors used to realistically express the complicated colors that occur with the setting sun. Wonderful pinks, yellows and oranges not only fill the sky but bounce off the rocks and choppy water. This original oil on canvas is entitled on the reverse side in pencil on the stretcher "New England Sunset, Maine" in his own hand. Their is also a nice gallery paper label on the reverse signifying this at one time was regarded as a show worthy and completed work of art. The condition of the painting is beautiful! The canvas is in excellent condition with just some small areas of loss but their very minor and I was unable to capture it in the photos. This painting has been professionally cleaned and relined and is unframed.
