Up for sale is an outstanding and exceedingly rare oil painting by the Swiss/Haitian 20th century painter Vivianne de Buren. Born in Switzerland, this female painter spent many years painting in Haiti and developed a unbelievably unique attractive style which this example perfectly displays. This mid century painting depicts the classic Biblical Nativity scene modernized with black figures in front of large line of tall buildings behind. With the star shinning brightly overhead, Christ is present in a manger at the bottom center of the work as Mary sits lovingly just above. From the overall composition to the color and style, this painting is an outstanding example from this rare painter as her works rarely surface for sale.
Frequently exhibiting in the Caribbean during her lifetime, Vivianne is under appreciated and under valued. Fortunately the last few years have made a remarkable difference in the awareness and appreciate of overlooked female painters of the 20th century and a strong surge in black artists and subject matter. Signed in the low right corner and dated 1953, this painting is executed in oil on wood panel measuring and impressive 29.5 x 47.5 inches while its original black and white wood frame measures 31.5 x 50 inches. The condition of the painting while good does show some minor surface abrasions/imperfections and if desired a tad in-painting from a conservator if desired. Still displays and looks beyond fantastic when hung. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine painting by Vivianne de Buren but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
