Up for sale is an exquisite old master oil painting on canvas after the famous Italian Renaissance painter Antonio Allgeri known as Correggio. This oil painting depicts the famous and often replicated, “The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine” originally painted circa 1520 and is of similar dimensions. Measuring approximately 10 1/2 x 9 inches this oil painting rests in a period gold wood frame measuring 12 1/2 x 11 inches. The provenance of the work is excellent as indicated verso with a typed paper label and ink noting the 19th-century owner to be Benjamin MacPherson Berrien Burroughs of the important Savannah, Georgia family. Purchased in 1851 in Naples, Italy; this painting was then brought back to the United States where Benjamin died shortly later in 1854 at only the age of 25 years old leaving behind his bride on their 1 year anniversary and 6-month infant, tragic. This is a gorgeous little oil painting on canvas and well painted at that! The condition of the work while very good shows heavy surface dirt/grime dimming the colors and craquelure. An easy-clean would greatly revive this fabulous painting bringing out the colors and depth which is muted in its current state.
