Up for sale is an outstanding limited edition etching by the talented 20th-century Italian painter and printmaker Domenico Gnoli. Entitled “The Ship of Fools” this extremely rare print is from the small edition of only 20 and is numbered “16” as seen low center. Signed in pencil low left “Domenico Gnoli” titled and dated 1957; this print with its full margins measures 27 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches while the plate mark measures 13 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. The image depicts an almost surreal ship at sea packed full of figures bursting forth from its open windows and deck. The ship which appears too top-heavy to continue without flipping on its side somehow is stays upright as waves curl around its hull.

The condition of this etching is pristine, free from any damage or cosmetic blemishes as it has clearly been well taken care of over the last nearly 70 years. Resting in a fine period silver and black wood frame measuring 28 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches, this print is ready to be hung and enjoyed. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine etching by Gnoli but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing! One other example from this edition resides in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. This is a rare opportunity to purchase this scarce work by Domenico Gnoli who unfortunately had a short life span to create art passing away at only 37 years of age.
