Executed in oil on canvas, mounted to wood panel, this unframed painting measures 28.5 x 43 inches and is signed “GG” low right. Showing six different figures, most on horseback, a ranch sits back right with cattle while a mountain range cast in a purple hue towers in the distance. The quality and overall execution is fantastic, from the detail seen in the animals and figures faces, the color is also phenomenal attesting to Gage’s talent as a fine illustrator. This is a large and impressive example from the artist arguably one of the best to have surfaced. Illustrating for The Saturday Evening Post, he worked on many books studying under Howard Pyle. The condition of this painting shows wear and age including craquelure, surface dirt/grime, surface imperfections, unevenness to its varnish, slight chipping and or rubbing around its edge and canvas which has been mounted to wood panel.
