Up for sale is an exceptional painting by the celebrated female American painter Sara Shewell Hayden depicting a floral still life. Titled “Marigolds” this painting is executed in watercolor on paper measuring 21 x 18 inches and is signed “S.S. Hayden” low right. Showing a lovely grouping of beautiful orange marigolds resting in a vase just off center, some of the flowers bend their way back towards the center, indicative of Hayden. What elevates this painting to another level is its superb provenance with multiple exhibition label still accompanying this painting after 120 years. Painted in 1907 this work has an exhibition label for “Carson Pirie Scott & Co Exhibition”, the “Chicago Artists Eleventh Annual Exhibition - 1907” and finally the third being; “The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadalphia Water Color Club - Sixth Annual Exhibition, 1908”. With each label titling the painting, and signed again by Hayden, the original price is listed at $40.00 and notes the painter being part of the University of Nebraska where she taught painting. This painting was exhibited shortly after the artist returned from a trip to Europe with William Merritt Chase studying in Spain. The condition of this work is fine, showing minimal light matt burn, some loss and discoloration to labels and comes unframed.
