Up for sale is an unbelievably rare 18th century engraving by the famous British painter and print maker Charles Howard Hodges entitled "Raphael's Mistress". Printed on October 30th 1785 this work is dated in the text at the low center margin and published by John Raphael Smith. This extremely scarce engraving can be located in the permanent collection of the British Museum and Harvard Museum. This richly printed engraving is of exceptional quality and has some provenance as it was retailed by Frederick B. Daniel & Son as seen from the paper label present verso. This originally framed work is breathtaking as it has never been removed or tampered with. The custom London made frame this work is housed in measures 15.75 x 20 inches while the engraving plate measures 10.75 x 14.75 inches. The condition of the print is excellent for its age showing some minor discoloration, a light old crease in the lower right corner of the print and minor dark spots in the margins.
