This woodblock entitled "Nihonbashi Bridge and Edobashi Bridge" by Hiroshige is an absolute fabulous example of the rare second state. Having never been displayed and stored flat its entire life the original color is visually striking with its deep red, blue, yellow and orange color that this composition is created from. This woodblock is executed on hand laid paper and adhered down to a thin paper via tacked in the top right and lower right corner. The lower right corner has a previous repair and slight current imperfection. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this incredibly rare Hiroshige woodblock print.
This print is the fist of the summer designs from the complete portfolio of works and depicts the famous bridge that sits at the center of downtown Edo. In the lower right corner their is a partial blue tuna which fisherman took as a challenge to catch as early as possible in the spring. This fish helps to signify the changing of the season and intense rivalry that took place in the Edo market as they would command high prices due to their rarity.
