Up for sale is a rare early state Utagawa Hiroshige color woodblock entitled “Traveling at Night Through the Hakone Mountains”. Printed in 1855 this original print measures 14 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches (margins) while the woodblock measures 13 3/8 x 8 7/8 inches and shows extensive wood grain. Adhesive tacks holds the print to its backed paper at its top two corners and under the print is a paper label indicating this came through the hands of Japanese print dealer S.M. Shiba Miyanoshita which bears his red seal present verso on the low left corner. The print shows loss of color, soiling, minor foxing etc....
