Up for sale is an incredibly rare early print of Utagawa Hiroshige’s woodblock entitled “Fine Evening on the Coast in Tsushima Province” printed in 1856 as part of the series “Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces”. This fine woodblock shows strong original wood grain and censor seal top right margin. This untrimmed sheet measures 14 3/8 x 9 3/4 inches and is in overall excellent condition with the sheet unbacked with fading to the green of the island and color of the arching rainbow overhead. This work is the final print #69 from the series and shows the Korean Strait which acted as an important trade route between the two countries. This print was originally purchased in the 1940’s and brought back from Japan by an American GI and was stored in a folder until being recently framed. It is housed in a fine blue wood frame, triple matted and ready to be hung and enjoyed.
