This stunning painting by the talented Charles Alfred Meurer depicts the famous “Hotel Ponce de Leon” in historic St. Augustine, Florida. This beautiful 19th century hotel is now Flagler College and was originally built by the famous American oil mogul Henry M. Flagler. This painting is executed in oil on artist board in an impressionist style with thick textured brushwork. The colors used are also quite spectacular with the orange tile roof and yellow car valet in great contrast to the lush green of the Florida vegetation in the foreground. The trees are created with swirling heavy applications of paint as well as certain portions of the buildings including the windows which are almost bursting with paint. This painting is in very good condition with surface dirt which is muting the colors and a couple little surface abrasions which would also be removed with a good cleaning. Charles signed the work in the lower right corner recto and titled and signed the work verso as well. The painting was gifted to an un-named Mr. & Mr’s and dated October of 1933. He also wrote his Terrace Ohio studio address verso. This work is resting in its original gold and green gesso wood frame which measures 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches and is ready to be hung and enjoyed.
