Up for sale is an absolutely outstanding 18th century watercolor depicting the famous French waterfall, the Cascade of Magland. This watercolor is signed in the lower left in pencil “E. Lindsay” and dated just thereafter 1796. The landscape scene this work projects is an absolute gem showing the falls crashing down 290 total meters quickly moving through the center of the composition. Two small figures are finely portrayed in the center of the work just at the base of the falls pointing to it with certain admiration. Below the sheer rock face of the mountain the water flows down to a more wooded area with a small building and bridge to the lower left.
One of the most notable qualities of this fine watercolor is its provenance of being an ex Colnaghi painting. Colnaghi is one of the longest run galleries specializing in the worlds finest art with this appearing to have been retailed by them in the early 1900’s. The watercolor was attached to a thicker paper backing for added reinforcement and to make the work easier / safer to frame. Verso plenty of pencil inscriptions are present indicating it is in fact an “Ex Colnaghi” work, its title in pencil along with other unknown inscriptions. The painting is in excellent condition but shows some minor matt burn. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this fine 18th century depicting of the Cascade of Magland but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
