Up for sale is an exquisitely rare ink drawing by the El Paso, Texas native Tom Lea depicting a prospector gazing upon the long lost legendary gold mine “El Naranjal”. Titled and signed in the low margin the work is inscribed “For my amigo Gerlach, with regards Tom Lea” and dated 1938. Thought to be located in the Sierra Mountains in Mexico this drawing was originally going to be used as the half title for a book titled “El Naranjal” as seen written in ink on the bottom of the sheet which is shown through the small window in the matting. Showing a prospector peering over a boulder with his face lit, light is shown radiating behind the figure in fine fashion almost cutting through the clouds overhead. After researching the book, I do not believe the book/work was ever published. The artist's depiction and choice of composition are phenomenal making this not only a rare original but a fine example of illustration work from the talented Texas native. Resting in its superb original carved wood frame measuring 16 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches the drawing measures 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches and is ready to be hung and enjoyed. The condition is excellent showing minimal toning, small brown dot just under the inscription and light cosmetic imperfections to its frame. The work has been framed to full museum standard with museum matting, glass and foam core. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this rare Tom Lea drawing but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
