Parker Newton was born in New York and worked most of his painting career in the North Eastern United States as well as thr Toronto area. Not only was Newton an a painter but also an illustrator and writer with a multitude of his paintings in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
This oil painting on artist board is fortunately titled on the reverse "Bar Harbor, Maine" which clearly a rocky coast he enjoyed greatly finding inspiration because their are a handful of paintings known of this same coast line that have come up for sale in the last decade. This is the smallest appearing to be a type of study for one of the larger compositions on canvas. The backside of the artist board actually has a rough sketch in pencil of the left rocky shoreline, showing his progression because on the finished side the left coast line starts in a significantly higher spot.
Extremely well painted this work is carried out in an impressionist style with each of his brushstroke visible. This also gives the painting a fantastic texture and contrast in colors as they clash together similar to the waves on the rocks. The condition of this work is good but their is some minimal damage like minor cracking, damage upper left corner and one slight spot of lifting paint. The images provided accurately represent the condition, quality and aesthetic beauty but if you should have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
