Gary Peterson is one of the premier contemporary Kwakwaka’wakw, (Namgis) carvers from Alert Bay on Cormorant Island, British Colombia. This carved and painted Eagle mask is made from cedar wood and is an absolutely phenomenal work by Gary. In a nearly all black and white eye popping composition the beak and feet of the eagle are yellow creating an intentionally pleasant eye catching contrast. Measuring approximately 14 1/2 inches tall and 11 inches wide the carving has been hung and while in superb condition some minor wear is seen present verso where the work rested against the wall. The eagles head looks to the left giving the viewer and excellent profile of the majestic bird making the work much more appealing when displayed. Gary signed this work and titled it verso present in the carved recess as seen photographed. Eagles are greatly enjoyed and appreciated by Gary as many visit his home in the front yard to eat the scraps of Salmon where Peterson throws after filleting. Gary’s family includes the famous carvers Doug Cramer, Bruce Alfred and Beau Dick. His works now reside in many private collections and institutions. This is a fine example of a clean and concise highly aesthetically pleasing carving depicting the fine bald eagle.
