19th Century American Pastoral Landscape w/ Sheep
33 x 27.25 inches (framed)
Oil on Canvas
Up for sale is a stellar antique oil painting depicting a traditional early American landscape with a Shepard guiding his flock accompanied by his trusty dog trailing just behind. This painting is executed in oil on canvas and is such a delightful and aesthetically pleasing composition. Their is a signature in the lower left corner that is tough to see but is photographed in the 10th image provided and appears to read "Surerus" and is dated "1929" just below. I am unable to find any information on that artist which given the talent he or she clearly had its hard to believe. The painting is a good size with the canvas measuring 26.5 x 21.25 inches while the heavy silver wood frame measures 33 x 27.25 inches.
The condition is just about as flawless as they come, their are no signs of damage or being mishandled including tears, rips, repairs, in-painting etc... Their is a nice minor overall craquelure and slightly darkening of colors which are appropriate to its age. The painting has been cleaned and its ready to enter into your home or collection. On the back of the stretcher their is some pencil writing "Mrs. Dawson Patsch 46D" as seen in the last image, the relation or individual is unknown.
The scene is sweet and enjoyable by any audience and will attract any eye that passes when hung. With the Shepard protecting his large flock the small with the 4 small babies in the rear. Not only can many Biblical symbology be seen but also felt. The painting seems to calm you just when viewing it taking you to that quite special place.
