Up for sale is a large and impressive antique oil painting depicting a mountainous lake landscape with a castle placed on the left side. This oil painting on canvas is absolutely beautiful and considering its age is in good condition with just a couple patches as seen on the reverse. What makes this such a great piece of art is that it still has the original smaller study painting on board that the artist executed to get solidify his idea for the final painting.

The large gold wood frame measures 41 x 29 inches while the canvas measures 36 x 24 inches. The detail is beautiful and the use of color is very appealing to the eye. When hung on the wall it will attract any eye that passes and will hold your attention as you take in the detail. Their is craquelure across the composition as well as surface grime which could use a good clean making the colors much brighter and vivid.

The small study painting is executed on artist board and is placed in a gold wood frame measuring 15.75 x 12.75 inches while the art board measures 12.5 x 9.5 inches. It is truly remarkable that the study is still paired with its final larger oil on canvas and has not been lost over the last 150 years since its creation. It is magnificent to see these studies because it shows the artists method of progress and evolving ideas. Their are slight differences compared to the final composition which obviously the artist found to be more satisfying for him and the people who would one day gaze into it.

The artist is unknown but it very well could be from a good listed and collected artist. This set of paintings are truly a magnificent duo which more than likely has an unknown story it wishes to tell.
