Antique Portraits of John & Sara Durry
Antique Portraits of John & Sara Durry
Antique Watercolor & Gouache
Matching Portraits
Excellent Condition
Provenance: Purchase from Kanda’s BOQ Gallery, Tokyo
Up for sale is a pair of matching antique portraits of a husband and wife that are finely painted! These two original works of art are executed in watercolor and gouache on paper and are unsigned but fortunately the identities are believed to be John Johnston Durry and Sara Abigail Durry who lived in New York. These two highly realistic portraits have an incredible amount of detail from the fine white collar lace and gold cameo jewelry on Sara to the fine eyes and beard of John. A nice bit of provenance accompanies the work as seen verso the original gallery label is still present on both works; a paper label from the well known Kanda's BOQ Gallery in Tokyo Japan which had the names of each individuals hand written in pencil. Kanda's was particularly known for dealing high end woodblocks which makes these two works even more interesting to me. Their origin is in the United States to which they then made their way to Japan only to selling decades ago and got brought back to the U.S. Resting in their original wood gallery frames the two tone contrast between the brown frame and gold inside is eye catching and looks great when hung. The frames each measure a total of 24 x 20 inches while the paintings measure 15 x 11 inches. The condition of the paintings are truly excellent free from any noticeable damage or repair while the frames show minor cosmetic imperfections / blemishes. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of these fine antique portraits but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
