Harold McDuffie Red Sail Ships
Harold McDuffie Red Sail Ships
Signed Low Left
Dated: 1937
Condition: Excellent (red description)
Up for sale is an outstanding original painting executed in gouache on paper depicting three sail boats with red sails sitting just off a small jetty under a grey sky. This painting is signed in the lower left corner by what appears to read Harold McDuffie and dated 1937. Painted in a slightly impressionist style this work was confidently executed by a very talented hand giving the work great texturing seen under closer examination and an even greater use of unexpected color. The work overall has a rather cool feeling from the landscape comprised of mostly whites, grays and blue in great contrast to the bright warm red sails above each of the three ships. Also seen in the water is an unexpected array of pastel and warmer tones seen in the shadows each ship casts. This contrast draws the eye and adds a nice dynamic to the work. The painting measures in total 13 x 17 1/2 inches while the painting itself measures 11 3/4 x 15 1/2 inches when not counting the hand painted darker border. The condition is excellent overall with just a small bit of loss top center margin and discoloration verso.
