Royal Academy Portrait after Rubens 19th cent.
12.75 x 14.75 inches (framed)
Watercolor
Signed: "Joseph Bridges"
Up for sale is a beautiful antique English watercolor from the listed Royal Academy artist Joseph Bridges. This work is a study of Rubens as seen on the reverse and depicts the portrait of most likely a Biblical New Testament figure. Their is an artist bio attached to the reverse which unfortunately has loss of text and an old portion of paper with the artist name and even address which was in Dalston, London. This original watercolor is well executed and dates from the early 1800's as Joseph Bridges was in the Academy early from about 1810 to 1854 which was a long time. Executed clearly by a talented hand with fine details and excellent depiction of human anatomy seen in the mans eye this is an overall charming work.
Resting in an antique gold wood frame the work sits under a gold oval cut matting with its original piece of glass with its natural imperfections of bubbles and lines. Their is no signature on this work other than on the verso. The watercolor measures 8 x 10 inches while the frame measures 12.75 x 14.75 inches. Overall the condition of the watercolor is excellent but under the matting their is area of loss from a previous framing job, none of which is visible when in its proper oval matting. The colors are excellent with a soft blue background and the mans red, yellow and green dress in contrast to that making his face stand out.
