Oil on Canvas
Illegible Name on Reverse
Up for sale is a stunning original antique oil painting on canvas of which I have entitled "The Beautiful Mistress". This well executed heavy impasto oil painting depicts as its main subject an attractive woman wearing a pink hat, jewelry, and we catch her just sliding on the right strap of her dress revealing a little of her breast. At first glimpse we may believe the painting is featuring a young beauty like so many other works do but here interestingly enough is that the painting tells a greater story when the right portion is viewed. In the upper right corner in a window we see a second woman looking down at a dark rough figure of a man. This woman in the window is calling out to her husband who has just left the home of the woman in pink. The artist chose to paint the male figure very rough and dark to signify that he is represented by a dreadful overtone and deceit, or veiled in darkness for his actions.
The overall quality and level of execution is impressive showing the artist had a great understanding of blending colors and creating compositions that tell stories. The impressionist feel is appealing to the eyes and the roughly applied paint adds wonderful texture and depth. Resting in its original wood frame which measures 27.75 x 21.5 inches the canvas measures 20.25 x 24.25 inches and is in overall good condition. Their is just one minor tear in the canvas which is near impossible to see unless under close inspection and a light is shown through the back. This tear is present in the lower left portion of the painting on the woman's arm. Unfortunately the painting is unsigned but their is a name written on the back of the stretcher in red that I have tried my best to read but was not able too.
