Excellent Expressionist Depicting
Up for sale is a stunning mid century expressionist oil painting on artist board depicting a couple dancing entitled "Calypso Dancers". This work is an absolute stunner painted with bright vivid colors and a sense of motion making you almost expect the figures to start moving once again. The man powerfully holds the female by the waste while wearing his bright yellow hat creating a nice contrast with the rest of the rather warm composition. This work is signed in the lower right corner which appears to read "Milford Cartes" and is dated 1952. Verso written in pencil is the title and original price of $60 which was a significant amount in 1952. The quality and level of execution is phenomenal clearly showing it was painted by a highly talented artist. The canvas board measures 16 x 20 inches while the original white wood frame measures 19 3/4 x 23 3/4 inches. The work is in good condition showing some discoloration and craquelure as well the frame shows some age / minor cosmetic blemishes.
